ADVICE FOR ALL

This week, I was given the opportunity to reflect on my classmate’s work and offer advice, whether it was good or bad. I kept a balance of having both constructive criticism and listing things they did exceptionally well. Giving feedback was not easy, but I believe I was able to be fair and accurate.

I was able to comment on 3 blogs and review their pitches. Each Digital Artefact Pitch was great and it was eye-opening to see various amounts of ideas. I was also able to recommend an article for each pitch, in hopes it would help their further research.

Amy: modifications and custom content in games

Isabeau Rosa: representation, presentation, and agency of female video game characters

Paris: testing out drinking games

Something Amy did well was mention some fantastic articles, Isabeau really grasped the idea of females in games and Paris had a great way to engage her audience.

An improvement I made for Amy was to have a more distinct choice of analysis structure. For Isabeau, I mentioned she should accompany her pitch video with 250 words and I also gave advice to Paris on how she can utilise her audience more.

I learnt many things while reviewing their work. Firstly, that it takes patience and great knowledge to give feedback that is extremely useful, so a massive shout out to all the wonderful tutors out there who mark hundreds of students’ work! Secondly, that the marking rubric is super important and lucky last, I was able to recognise things I didn’t particularly do well, such as my aesthetic relating to game media.

Although I only received one comment, Luke gave me excellent advice that I should steer from the B&W art style a little and try to reach engagement through varying aesthetics and art styles, this way I can get broader engagement and a target audience that relates more so to game media. This is something I am going to definitely take into consideration. It has made me re-think my whole Digital Artefact but I guess everyone needs to experience FEFO!

I was able to gain insight into how other students interpreted the requirements of the assessment by researching their previous work. In turn, it highlighted areas where my own pitch needed improvement.
